Character Counter

Count the characters in text, with and without spaces, along with words and sentences. Free, and runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

About Word Counter

Characters with and without spaces, words, unique words, sentences, paragraphs, lines, an estimated reading time at 200 words per minute, and the ten most frequent words longer than two characters. Enough to answer both “does this fit” and “am I repeating myself”.

The character counts are the ones that matter for platform limits — meta descriptions, social posts, form fields — and the frequency list is a fast way to catch the phrase you have leaned on four times in three paragraphs.

Where it helps

  • Both character counts, since some limits include spaces and some do not.
  • Word frequency exposes unintentional repetition.
  • Reading time gives a quick sense of length for an article or a talk.
  • Nothing is uploaded, so drafts and confidential documents stay local.

Limits

  • Words are whitespace-separated, which undercounts languages such as Chinese and Japanese that do not space between words.
  • Character counts are code units, so an emoji or an astral character may count as two where a platform counts one.
  • Sentence detection splits on ., ! and ?, so abbreviations and decimals inflate the count.
  • 200 words per minute is an average — technical material reads considerably slower.

Frequently asked questions

Which count does Twitter or LinkedIn use?

Most platforms count characters including spaces, and many count a URL as a fixed length regardless of its real size. Check the specific platform's rule.

Why is my emoji counted as two characters?

It is a single code point above U+FFFF, which occupies two UTF-16 units. The Unicode Converter shows the exact code points.

How is reading time calculated?

Words divided by 200 and rounded up. Adjust upwards for dense or technical writing.

Why are short words missing from the frequency list?

Words of three characters or fewer are skipped, because otherwise the list is just “the”, “and” and “for”.
