About Profit Calculator
The small profit and loss behind a product: revenue, the cost of the goods, what is left after each, and how many units have to move before the fixed costs are covered.
Gross and net are different questions and both matter. Gross profit is what is left after the cost of the goods themselves, and it tells you whether the product works at all. Net profit takes the fixed costs off as well — rent, salaries, software — and tells you whether the business does.
Break-even falls out of the same numbers: fixed costs divided by the profit each unit contributes. It is the number that turns a pricing argument into an arithmetic one.
Where it helps
- Separates gross from net, which are different questions about the same product.
- Gives the break-even count, which is the number pricing arguments actually turn on.
- Shows the profit per unit, so a price change can be judged immediately.
- Runs locally — none of your cost structure is transmitted.
Limits
- One product at a time: a mixed catalogue needs the numbers blended first.
- It ignores tax, which lands on profit rather than on revenue.
- Fixed costs are treated as a single number for the period, not spread or amortised.
- It says nothing about cash flow, which is what actually closes businesses.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between gross and net profit?
Gross is revenue less the cost of the goods sold. Net takes the fixed costs off as well. A healthy gross and a negative net means the product works and the overheads do not.
How is break-even worked out?
Fixed costs divided by the profit each unit contributes — the price less the unit cost. If a unit loses money there is no break-even at any volume.
Should the price include tax?
No. Work in prices excluding VAT or GST, because the tax is not yours to keep.
