Tip Calculator
Tip, total and the split between everyone. Free, and runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded, stored or sent to a server.
About Tip Calculator
The tip, the total and what each person owes, which is the arithmetic nobody wants to do at the end of a meal. Splitting is the useful half: a bill divided between four with the tip already in it, to the penny.
Rounding up is here because it is what people actually do. Set a rounding step and the total is rounded up to it, with the tip absorbing the difference — so you can hand over a round number and know what it came to.
Customs vary enormously: 15 to 20% is expected in the United States, 10% is generous in much of Europe, service is often already included in the UK, and tipping is unusual or unwelcome in Japan. The percentage is yours to set.
Where it helps
- Splits the total and the tip between any number of people.
- Rounds the total up to a step you choose, with the tip absorbing the difference.
- Shows what the tip works out to as a percentage after rounding.
- Runs locally, and needs no network at a restaurant table.
Limits
- It does not know whether service is already on the bill — check before adding a second tip.
- An even split ignores who ordered what, which is sometimes the whole argument.
- Card machines in some countries add their own suggested percentages on top of the total including tax.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
It depends entirely on where you are: 15–20% in the United States, around 10% in much of Europe, nothing in Japan, and in the UK check whether a service charge is already on the bill.
Do I tip on the total including tax?
Convention says on the pre-tax amount, but most people use the total and the difference is small. Enter whichever figure you mean as the bill.
What does the rounding do?
It rounds the total up to the step you choose and gives the difference to the tip, so you can hand over a round amount and still know what the tip came to.
