About ROI Calculator
Return on investment as a percentage, plus the number that actually lets you compare investments: the annualised rate. A 65% return is excellent over one year and mediocre over ten, and only the annual figure says which you have.
The annualised rate is the compound rate that turns the amount invested into the amount returned over the period given — the same idea as CAGR. From it comes the doubling time, which is the most intuitive way to feel a rate: 7% a year doubles in a decade.
Leave the years at zero if you only want the simple return, and it will say so rather than inventing a period.
Where it helps
- Annualises the return, which is the only fair way to compare periods of different lengths.
- Gives the multiple and the doubling time, which are easier to feel than a percentage.
- Works for anything with a cost and a value: a fund, a property, a marketing campaign.
- Runs locally, so your positions stay private.
Limits
- It assumes one amount in and one amount out; regular contributions need an IRR calculation instead.
- Fees, tax and inflation are not deducted, and all three are real returns lost.
- Past return is a measurement, not a forecast.
- It is a calculator, not investment advice.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between ROI and the annualised figure?
ROI is the whole gain as a percentage of what went in. The annualised figure is the yearly compound rate that would produce it, which is what comparisons need.
Does it handle regular contributions?
No. Paying in monthly makes this an internal rate of return problem, and the annualised figure here would flatter it.
Should I use the value before or after fees?
After. Fees and tax are part of what the investment actually returned to you, and leaving them out is how a mediocre return looks good.
