About Speed Converter

Converts a speed between kilometres per hour, miles per hour, metres per second, feet per second and knots, all at once from a single value. Road speeds, wind speeds, running speeds and boat speeds all use different units, and this puts them side by side.

For walking, running and cycling speeds — up to 60 km/h — it also gives the pace, the time it takes to cover a kilometre or a mile, which is how runners and their watches usually describe speed.

Where it helps

  • Road, scientific and nautical units side by side from one value.
  • Adds a pace per kilometre and per mile for running and cycling speeds.
  • Exact definitions for every unit, including the knot at 1,852 metres per hour.
  • Accepts decimals, so a wind speed of 4.5 m/s converts as easily as a car's.

Limits

  • Mach is left out, because the speed of sound depends on the air temperature and altitude.
  • Pace is only shown up to 60 km/h, where it stops being a useful way to read a speed.
  • It converts a speed; working out a travel time from a distance is a separate calculation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert km/h to mph?

Divide by 1.609344, or multiply by about 0.62. So 100 km/h is roughly 62 mph.

What is a knot?

One nautical mile per hour, which is 1.852 km/h or about 1.15 mph. It is the unit for ships, aircraft and wind speeds in marine forecasts.

How do I turn a speed into a running pace?

Divide 60 by the speed in km/h to get minutes per kilometre. The converter does this for you and writes it as minutes and seconds, such as 5:30.
