About Excel to PDF

Draws a workbook's sheets as tables in a PDF, one sheet per page, with the columns shared out according to how much each of them holds. Shared strings and inline strings are both resolved, so the cells read as they do in the spreadsheet.

Values, not formatting. Fonts, colours, borders, number formats and conditional rules are not carried over, formulas are shown as the value last calculated and saved into the file, and charts and images are left out. This gives a readable printout of what a sheet contains — which is usually what somebody asking for a PDF of a spreadsheet actually wants.

Where it helps

• Columns are sized by what they hold, so a table of dates does not get the same width as one of sentences.
• The first row can be drawn as a header, and gridlines can be turned off.
• One sheet or all of them, in portrait or landscape on A4 or Letter.
• The workbook stays in your browser.

Limits

• Cell formatting, colours, borders and number formats are not carried across.
• Formulas appear as their last saved value; a file saved without cached values shows blanks.
• Charts, images and pivot tables are not drawn at all.
• A very wide sheet is scaled down to fit the page, which can make the text small.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my numbers look different?

Number formats live in the workbook's styles, which are not applied here — the underlying value is shown. A date will often appear as the serial number the spreadsheet stores.

Are formulas calculated?

No. The value the spreadsheet last saved is used, which is what a file written by Excel or LibreOffice normally carries.

Can I convert one sheet only?

Yes. Type its name in the sheet box; leave it blank for every sheet.

My table is too small to read — what can I do?

Landscape helps, and so does splitting a very wide sheet into fewer columns before converting. A sheet wider than the page is scaled to fit.
