About Remove Blank Pages

Finds the pages that have nothing on them, and — if you ask — takes them out. The usual source is a duplex scanner fed a stack with one-sided sheets in it, which produces a blank page for every back that was scanned and empty.

A page is blank here when its content stream paints nothing at all: no text, no image, no fill, no stroke. That is decided by reading the page rather than by rendering it and counting white pixels, which makes it fast on a long document and exact rather than approximate.

It also makes it strict in a way worth knowing about: a scanned blank sheet is a *photograph* of a blank sheet, which is an image, which is content. Those will not be found. The test is "does this page draw anything", not "does this page look empty", and the difference matters most on exactly the documents people want to clean up.

Where it helps

  • Reads the content stream rather than rendering pages, so a long document is checked in moments.
  • Lists the pages before removing anything, so a mistake is caught before it happens.
  • Exact: a page that paints nothing is genuinely empty, with no threshold to tune.
  • Removal copies the surviving pages wholesale, so nothing is re-rendered.
  • The document stays in your browser.

Limits

  • A scanned blank page is an image of a blank page and will not be found. Those need a pixel-level check, which this deliberately does not do.
  • A page that paints a white rectangle over the whole sheet is not blank by this test, though it looks it.
  • A page with only a header, a footer or a page number is not blank — which is usually right and occasionally not what you wanted.
  • Bookmarks and links pointing past a removed page will be off by the number removed.
  • Password-protected files must be unlocked first.

Frequently asked questions

Why did it find no blank pages in my scan?

Because a scanned blank page is a photograph of blank paper — an image, and images are content. This checks whether a page draws anything, which for a scan is always yes. Use the page list from a quick look and Delete Pages instead.

Is a page with just a page number blank?

No. It draws text, so it is not empty. That is usually the right answer: removing the numbered blanks from a printed document would break its pagination.

Why not just render every page and check the pixels?

Because it is a hundred rasterisations to answer a question the page already answers, and it introduces a threshold — how white is white enough — that is wrong for somebody. Reading the content stream is exact and immediate. The trade is the scanned case above.

Can I delete the pages myself instead?

Yes — the find mode gives you the list, and Delete Pages takes exactly that.
