About Watermark PDF

Writes words or a picture across a document's pages — DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, a client name, a company logo. The mark can sit once in a corner or in the middle, or repeat across the whole page on the diagonal, at whatever size, angle, colour and opacity you set.

A watermark is a mark, not a lock. It is drawn on top of the page and anyone with a PDF editor can take it off again. What it does well is make a copy obviously a copy, and remind whoever opens the file what it is — which is usually the whole job.

Where it helps

  • Text or a picture, once per page or tiled across it.
  • Size, angle, colour, opacity, position and margin are all adjustable.
  • Specific pages can be marked instead of the whole document.
  • The document and the logo both stay in this tab.

Limits

  • A watermark can be removed by anyone with a PDF editor — it marks a document, it does not protect one.
  • It is drawn on top, so it can obscure content underneath; lower the opacity if it does.
  • Pictures have to be PNG or JPEG, the two formats a PDF carries directly.
  • The text is set in a standard PDF font, so characters outside Latin-1 are replaced.

Frequently asked questions

Can the watermark be removed?

Yes, by anyone with a PDF editor. It is a visible mark, not a protection. Use PDF Password if you need the file itself restricted.

Why is my watermark hiding the text?

Lower the opacity — 15 to 25 per cent is usually enough to read through — or move it into a corner.

What picture formats work?

PNG and JPEG. A PNG with a transparent background sits best over a page.

Can I mark only some pages?

Yes. Name them in the pages box, like "1" for a cover sheet or "2-9" for the body.
