About PDF to Word

Turns a PDF's text into a .docx you can edit, with its paragraphs and headings intact. Lines are grouped back into paragraphs from their spacing and their line lengths, and text set noticeably larger than the body becomes a heading — because a PDF records neither.

That last point is the honest limit of every PDF-to-Word converter, including the expensive ones. A PDF stores glyphs at co-ordinates: it does not know what a paragraph is, which text is a heading, where a table's cells are, or which block is a footnote. Everything structural in the output is inferred. What comes across reliably is the words, in reading order, grouped sensibly.

What does not come across is the layout: columns, tables, headers and footers, footnotes, images and exact typography are not reconstructed. This produces a document to work on, not a copy of the original's appearance.

A PDF that is a scan has no text to read at all, and the tool says so rather than handing back an empty document — run it through the OCR tool first.

Where it helps

  • Paragraphs are reassembled from line spacing rather than emitted line by line.
  • Headings are detected from text size, so the document has an outline to navigate.
  • Page breaks can be kept or dropped, depending on whether you want the pages or the prose.
  • The .docx opens in Word, Pages, LibreOffice and Google Docs, and never left your browser.

Limits

  • Layout is not reproduced: columns, tables, headers, footers, footnotes and images are lost.
  • Bold and italic within a paragraph are not carried across.
  • A multi-column page is read in the order the document draws it, which is sometimes not reading order.
  • A scanned PDF has no text to extract — use the OCR tool first.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the result not look like my PDF?

Because it is not a render, and could not be. A PDF holds positioned glyphs, not a document structure, so anything beyond the words and their grouping has to be guessed. This carries the text across cleanly and does not pretend to carry the design.

It found no text — why?

The PDF is almost certainly a scan: pictures of words rather than words. Run it through the OCR tool, then convert.

Are tables converted?

Not as tables. For tabular data use PDF to Excel, which works out the columns from where the text sits.

Can I convert only some pages?

Yes — name them in the pages box, like "1-20".
