PDF Password Remover

Strip the password from a PDF you can already open. Free, and runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded, stored or sent to a server.

About PDF Password Remover

Removes the password from a PDF you can already open, so the file stops asking every time. Decryption happens in your browser: the document is parsed, its encryption dictionary read, the key derived from your password, and the streams rewritten without encryption.

PDFs carry two kinds of password. A user password is required to open the file at all — supply it here. An owner password only sets restrictions on printing or copying while leaving the content readable, and those files can be unlocked with the password field left blank.

The first pages of the unlocked file are rendered underneath the result, so you can see that the right document came out before downloading it. Set the page count to 0 to skip that step on a long document.

Where it helps

  • The document and its password never leave your browser.
  • Handles both user passwords and owner-restriction-only files.
  • Produces a normal PDF that opens anywhere, with no viewer plugin needed.
  • The result is previewed in place, so you can check the document before saving it.
  • Files up to 64 MB are processed locally, with no upload wait.

Limits

  • You need the password, or the file must be restricted by owner password only — this is not a password cracker.
  • 64 MB is the ceiling for in-browser processing.
  • Unusual encryption handlers and DRM-protected documents are outside what it supports.
  • Removing protection from a document you are not entitled to modify may breach the rights attached to it.

Frequently asked questions

Can it open a PDF whose password I do not know?

No. It decrypts with the password you supply, or removes owner restrictions where the content is not actually encrypted against reading.

What is the difference between the two password types?

A user password blocks opening the file. An owner password only restricts printing, copying and editing — the content itself is readable.

Is my document uploaded?

No. Parsing and decryption run in this tab, which is exactly why it is worth doing here rather than on a random website.

Why is only part of my document previewed?

The preview draws a set number of pages, five by default, because each one is rendered to an image. Raise it for more, or set it to 0 to skip the preview and just take the file.

Why did it fail on a large scanned document?

Anything over 64 MB is refused, because processing it in the browser would exhaust memory. Split the file or use a desktop tool.
