About Rotate by Any Angle

Turns pages by any angle, not just the quarter turns a PDF page can record. Straightening a scan that went through the feeder at three degrees, angling a label, turning a plan to fit a sheet — none of those are multiples of 90, and none of them are possible with the rotation a page stores.

That is a real distinction, not a technicality. /Rotate on a page takes 0, 90, 180 or 270 and nothing else: it is a display instruction that costs nothing and loses nothing. Any other angle has to be *drawn* — the page is embedded and painted onto a new sheet at an angle. The text stays selectable, but the page has been rebuilt, and for a quarter turn the Rotate PDF tool remains the better answer.

Growing the sheet is on by default because the alternative surprises people: turning a page inside its original rectangle puts the corners outside it, and they are cut off. Grown, the sheet becomes the bounding box of the turned page, and the background colour fills the triangles that are now empty.

Where it helps

  • Any angle, to a tenth of a degree — which is what straightening a scan actually needs.
  • The sheet can grow to hold the turned page, or stay put and clip the corners.
  • A background colour for the empty triangles a turn leaves behind.
  • Only the pages you name are turned; the rest are copied untouched.
  • The document stays in your browser.

Limits

  • Unlike a quarter turn, this redraws the page — the document is rebuilt rather than annotated with a rotation value.
  • Links, annotations and form fields are not carried through the rebuild.
  • It cannot detect the angle for you; straightening a scan is trial and error against the preview.
  • Text at an angle selects and copies awkwardly in most readers, however sharp it looks.
  • Password-protected files must be unlocked first.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there a separate tool for 90 degrees?

Because a quarter turn can be recorded rather than drawn. Rotate PDF writes a number into the page and changes nothing else — instant, lossless, reversible. This rebuilds the page, which is only worth doing for angles that cannot be recorded.

Can it straighten a scan automatically?

No. Detecting skew means rendering the page and looking for the dominant angle of its text lines, which is a different kind of operation. Here you supply the angle and check the preview.

Why did the corners disappear?

The sheet was kept at its original size, so the turned page no longer fits inside it. Switch on "grow the sheet to fit" and the page will be given room.

Which way does a positive angle turn?

Anticlockwise, following PDF's own convention. A scan that leans to the right needs a negative angle.
