Office Password Remover

Remove the password from a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file. Free, and runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored.

About Office Password Remover

Removes the password from a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file you can already open, so it stops asking every time. The document is decrypted with the password you supply and written back out as an ordinary file.

It reads what Office writes: the agile and standard ECMA-376 schemes used by the .docx, .xlsx and .pptx family, and the older RC4 and XOR schemes of the 97-2003 .doc, .xls and .ppt formats. Decryption happens in this tab, so neither the document nor the password is sent anywhere.

Where it helps

  • The document and its password never leave your browser.
  • Reads both the modern Office encryption and the older 97-2003 schemes.
  • Produces an ordinary document that opens without a prompt anywhere.
  • Files up to 32 MB are processed locally, with no upload wait.

Limits

  • You need the password: this decrypts, it does not guess.
  • 32 MB is the ceiling for in-browser processing.
  • Editing restrictions set inside a document are a separate feature and are not touched.
  • Removing protection from a document you are not entitled to change may breach the rights attached to it.

Frequently asked questions

Can it open a file whose password I do not know?

No. The content is genuinely encrypted, and the password is what derives the key. This is not a password cracker.

Which formats does it read?

Word, Excel and PowerPoint files from 2007 onwards, including macro-enabled ones, and the older .doc, .xls and .ppt formats.

Is my document uploaded?

No. Decryption runs in this tab, which is exactly why it is worth doing here rather than on a random website.

Why does it take a few seconds?

Office derives the key from 100 000 rounds of SHA-512, and that work has to be repeated to open the file. It runs off the main thread, so the page stays usable meanwhile.

It says the document is not protected — why?

Because it opens without a password. A file that only restricts editing, or one protected by a sheet password, is not encrypted and has nothing to remove here.
