Add Text to PDF

Add text to a PDF page, and hide what is underneath. Free, and runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded, stored or sent to a server.

About Edit PDF

Adds text to a page at a position you choose, and can fill a box behind it to hide whatever was there. That covers the things people actually want from a PDF editor day to day: filling in a form that has no form fields, correcting a wrong date, adding a reference number, blanking out a line before sending.

It stamps rather than retypes, and it is worth knowing why. A PDF does not store a paragraph; it stores glyphs at co-ordinates, with no record of which ones make a sentence or how it would reflow if a word changed. Every PDF editor either draws on top, as this does, or rebuilds the page from a guess about its structure and changes how it looks. Drawing on top is the honest half of that choice.

Positions are in points from the top-left corner of the page, and there are 72 points to an inch — so 72, 72 is one inch in from the corner. The page's own size in points is reported after a run, which is the quickest way to find the numbers you need.

Where it helps

  • Text goes exactly where you put it, in points from the top-left corner.
  • A filled box can hide what was underneath, which is how a correction is made to look like one.
  • Four typefaces, any size and any colour.
  • The document stays in your browser rather than going to an editing service.

Limits

  • It cannot retype or reflow the existing text, because a PDF holds glyphs at co-ordinates rather than editable paragraphs.
  • Covering text hides it visually; the original characters are still in the file and can be extracted, so this is not redaction.
  • Finding the right position takes a run or two, since there is no drag-and-drop canvas.
  • Text is set in a standard PDF font, so characters outside Latin-1 are replaced.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit the text that is already in the PDF?

No, and no browser tool honestly can. A PDF stores positioned glyphs, not paragraphs — so editors either stamp over the top, as this does, or rebuild the page and change its appearance.

Is covering text the same as redacting it?

No. The box hides the text on screen but the characters are still in the file, and copying or a text extractor will find them. Proper redaction removes the content itself.

How do I find the right position?

Points from the top-left, 72 to the inch. Run it once, look at the preview and the page size reported in the details, and adjust.

Can I add more than one line?

Yes — the text box keeps your line breaks, and the whole block is placed together.
