Flatten PDF

Make form answers part of the page. Free, and runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded, stored or sent to a server.

About Flatten PDF

A filled PDF form is two documents in one: the page, and a layer of interactive widgets holding the answers. Flattening draws the widgets into the page and removes them, after which what you see is all there is.

The reason to do it is that the two layers do not always travel together. A form filled in one reader and opened in another can show blank fields; a print driver may render the page and not the widgets; a parser reading the page content finds nothing. "I sent the completed form and it arrived empty" is almost always this.

The trade is deliberate and total: once flattened, the answers are page content, and nobody — including you — can edit them as fields again. That is the point when a form is being filed or signed, and exactly wrong when it is a template somebody else still has to fill in.

Where it helps

  • Fixes the commonest PDF-form failure: answers that are invisible in another reader or when printed.
  • Field appearances are refreshed before flattening, so values set programmatically are drawn rather than lost.
  • Says how many fields it found, which doubles as a check on whether a form was interactive at all.
  • Nothing is rasterised — the text of the answers stays selectable.
  • The document stays in your browser, which for a completed form is the whole point.

Limits

  • Irreversible. Once the fields are gone, the answers cannot be edited as fields again — keep the original.
  • Reader annotations such as highlights and comments are a separate layer and are not flattened here.
  • A field using a font that cannot be embedded may be drawn with a substitute.
  • XFA forms — the rarer, XML-based kind — are not supported by this flattener.
  • Password-protected files must be unlocked first.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my filled form arrive blank?

Because the answers lived in a widget layer the receiving reader did not render, or because the form was saved without its appearance streams. Flattening turns the answers into page content, which nothing can fail to show.

Can I undo it?

No. The interactive fields are removed. Keep the unflattened original if the answers may need changing.

Does this remove my signature?

A drawn or typed signature becomes part of the page, which is normally what you want. A cryptographic digital signature is a different thing entirely, and flattening a signed document will invalidate it.

What about highlights and comments?

Those are annotations rather than form fields, and they are left alone here.
