Image Resizer

Resize to a size, a proportion or a longest side. Free, and runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded, stored or sent to a server.

About Image Resizer

Three ways of asking, because there are three ways people think about it: to an exact size in pixels, by a proportion of what you started with, or by the longest side — which is the one to use when the pictures are a mix of portrait and landscape and they all need to fit the same column.

When you give both a width and a height, the shape you asked for may not be the shape you have, and something has to give. Fit inside pads the difference with a colour, fill the box crops the middle out of it, and stretch distorts. Each is right sometimes; the default pads, because that is the one that never lies about the picture.

Making a picture bigger is off by default. Nothing can recover detail that was never captured, so an upscale invents pixels — it is occasionally what you want and usually a mistake, and the tool says which one happened.

It runs in the browser on anything it can read, HEIC and SVG included, and nothing is uploaded.

Where it helps

  • Three ways to ask for a size, so you do not have to do the arithmetic yourself.
  • Says what it did: the scale, the fit, and whether anything was invented by upscaling.
  • Fills the padding with a colour you choose rather than defaulting to black.
  • Reads HEIC and SVG, and can save to a different format on the way through.
  • Runs locally, so an unreleased screenshot is not uploaded to resize it.

Limits

  • Re-encoding through a canvas drops EXIF, colour profiles and orientation tags.
  • Upscaling invents pixels; it cannot bring back detail the camera never recorded.
  • Very large images are limited by what a canvas can hold in this browser.
  • One picture at a time: there is no batch mode.

Frequently asked questions

How do I keep the shape?

Give one side and leave the other at zero. The tool works the other one out, which is what keeping the aspect ratio means.

What is the difference between fit inside and fill the box?

Fit inside shows the whole picture and pads what is left over. Fill the box fills the frame and crops what does not fit. Neither distorts; stretch does.

Why is my resized photo bigger than the original?

Usually because the original was a well-compressed JPEG and the output is PNG. Choose JPEG or WebP for photographs, or keep the original format.

Does it resize an SVG?

It draws the SVG at the size you ask for and saves a bitmap. To keep it as a vector, use the SVG Converter or just change the width in the markup.
