SVG to PNG Converter

Draw an SVG at any size, or wrap a bitmap in one. Free, and runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded, stored or sent to a server.

About SVG Converter

An SVG has no size of its own — it has a size it says it would like to be — so turning one into pixels is really a question of what size you need. Give a scale or a width and it is drawn at that, sharp, because the shapes are rendered rather than stretched.

The other direction is honest about what it is. A bitmap cannot become shapes by wishing: what this writes is an SVG with the picture carried inside it, which is the right file to hand a vector tool that will not accept a PNG, and the wrong file to expect to scale like a drawing. It is a wrapper, not a trace.

The SVG is drawn through an image element, which never runs script in the file it is given — so an SVG from somewhere you do not trust cannot do anything here beyond drawing itself.

Where it helps

  • Renders at whatever size you ask for, so the output is sharp at the size it will be used.
  • Takes a width in pixels as well as a scale, which is what an asset pipeline usually wants.
  • Can paint a background, so an SVG with transparency can become a JPEG without going black.
  • Says plainly that the bitmap direction is a wrapper rather than a trace.
  • Runs locally, and draws untrusted SVG in a context that cannot run its scripts.

Limits

  • The bitmap-to-SVG direction embeds the picture; it does not trace it into paths.
  • An SVG that pulls in external fonts or images will render without them, because nothing is fetched.
  • A file with no width, height or viewBox has to be guessed at, and is drawn at 512 px.
  • Filters and blend modes render as the browser renders them, which is not always as a design tool does.

Frequently asked questions

What size will my SVG come out at?

Whatever you ask for. Without a width, it uses the size declared in the file — or its viewBox — multiplied by the scale.

Can it turn a photograph into a real vector?

No. That is tracing, and it needs a different kind of tool. What this writes is an SVG carrying the bitmap inside it, and it says so.

Why did my text render in the wrong font?

The SVG referenced a font that is not installed and nothing is fetched from the network. Convert the text to outlines before exporting.

Is it safe to open an SVG from someone else here?

It is drawn through an image element, which does not execute script. Nothing in the file runs, and nothing leaves your browser.
