About N-Up PDF

Several pages on one sheet: two-up for reading a report without a forest's worth of paper, four-up for slide handouts, nine or sixteen for a contact sheet of a long document. The pages are embedded rather than rasterised, so the text on a four-up handout is still selectable and still searchable.

The scale is the thing to watch. Four-up on the same sheet size halves each dimension, so 11pt body text arrives at about 5.5pt — legible on paper for someone with good eyes and a good printer, and not much else. The result reports the exact scale for that reason, and the usual fix is to impose onto a larger sheet: four A4 pages onto A3 is full size.

Reading order matters more than it sounds. Across-then-down is what a handout wants; down-then-across is what a slide deck printed in columns wants, and getting it wrong produces a document that is perfectly arranged and impossible to follow.

Where it helps

  • Pages are embedded, not rasterised: text stays selectable and vector artwork stays sharp.
  • Reports the exact scale, so "is this still readable" is a number rather than a guess.
  • Seven grids from two-up to sixteen-up, in either reading order.
  • Impose onto a larger sheet to keep full size — four A4 pages onto A3 shrinks nothing.
  • Optional outlines around each placed page, which double as cut lines.
  • The document stays in your browser.

Limits

  • Shrinking is shrinking: on the same sheet size, four-up halves the type and nine-up thirds it.
  • Every page is scaled by the same amount within a grid cell, so a document that mixes portrait and landscape pages will have uneven white space.
  • Links, form fields and annotations are not carried onto the imposed sheet — the page content is.
  • Bookmarks point at the original page numbers, which no longer exist as separate pages.
  • Password-protected files must be unlocked first.

Frequently asked questions

Will the text still be readable?

The result says what scale it used. As a rule, 2-up on the same sheet is comfortable, 4-up is fine for slides and marginal for body text, and 9-up and beyond is a contact sheet rather than something to read. Imposing onto a larger sheet avoids the shrink entirely.

Is the text still selectable?

Yes. Pages are embedded as page content rather than rendered to images, so search, selection and copy all still work at whatever size they ended up.

What is the difference between this and a booklet?

N-up puts pages on a sheet in order. A booklet puts them in the scrambled order that comes out right once the stack is folded — page 1 next to the last page. Use the Booklet tool if the result is going to be folded.

Can I print two copies of the same page per sheet?

Not directly. Duplicate the pages first with the organiser, then impose the result.
