Compress PNG
Make PNG images smaller by resizing and re-encoding them. Free, and runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored.
About Image Compressor
Two levers, applied together: resizing to a maximum width, and re-encoding at a chosen quality. Resizing usually saves far more than quality tuning — a 4000-pixel photo displayed in a 800-pixel column is carrying twenty times the pixels it needs.
Quality around 70 to 80 is the practical sweet spot for photographs: the file is a fraction of the original and the difference is invisible at normal viewing size. Below about 60, JPEG artefacts start to show around edges and in flat gradients.
Where it helps
- Resize and re-encode in one step, which is where the real savings are.
- Before and after sizes are reported, so the saving is concrete.
- Runs locally with no upload wait, even for large photographs.
- JPEG, WebP or PNG output to suit the destination.
Limits
- Lossy compression is irreversible — keep the original.
- PNG output is lossless, so the quality setting has little effect there; resizing is what shrinks it.
- Metadata including EXIF and colour profiles is dropped by the canvas round trip.
- Aggressive settings visibly damage screenshots and text, which suffer far more than photographs.
Frequently asked questions
What quality should I use?
70 to 80 for photographs on the web. Push higher for images that will be zoomed, and prefer resizing over dropping quality below 60.
Why did compressing my PNG barely help?
PNG is lossless, so quality does not apply. Reduce the dimensions, or convert to WebP if the image is photographic.
What maximum width should I set?
Around twice the display width, so the image stays sharp on high-density screens. For a 600-pixel column, 1200 is plenty.
Why does my screenshot look blurry after compression?
Text and sharp edges compress badly with JPEG. Use PNG or WebP for screenshots and keep the quality high.
