HEIC to WebP Converter
Convert HEIC images to WebP, with the quality and background you choose. Free, and runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored.
About Image Converter
Images are decoded, drawn to a canvas and re-encoded entirely inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded, which is the important difference from the usual online converter — holiday photos, screenshots of internal dashboards and unreleased artwork stay on your machine.
It reads PNG, JPEG, JFIF, WebP, GIF, AVIF, BMP, SVG and HEIC, and writes PNG, JPEG, JFIF, WebP and GIF. HEIC is the one a browser cannot open by itself — an iPhone photo is decoded here by libheif, which is fetched only when a HEIC actually turns up, so the first HEIC of a session takes a few seconds and the rest are quick.
HEIC and AVIF are read only, and that is a limit of browsers rather than a choice: both are decoded and neither can be encoded from a canvas. Offering them as outputs would mean quietly handing back a PNG with the wrong name on it, so they are not offered.
JFIF deserves a word, because it confuses people: a .jfif file is a JPEG. Windows sometimes saves one with that extension and half the software in the world then refuses to open it. Converting it to .jpg here changes the name, not the pixels.
Pick the format by what the image contains. PNG keeps sharp edges and transparency, which is what screenshots, logos and diagrams need. JPEG is smaller for photographs but has no transparency. WebP is usually smallest at equivalent quality and is read by every current browser. GIF is 256 colours and worth avoiding unless something insists on it.
Where it helps
- Fully local: the file never leaves the browser tab.
- Reports the size change, so the trade-off is visible before you commit.
- Quality is adjustable for the lossy formats.
- Reads HEIC and SVG, which browsers cannot open on their own, and writes GIF, which a canvas cannot.
- No upload limits or queueing — conversion is immediate.
Limits
- Re-encoding through a canvas drops metadata: EXIF, colour profiles and orientation tags are not carried over.
- Converting to JPEG discards transparency, which becomes black or white rather than see-through.
- Going from a lossy source to another lossy format compounds artefacts; convert from the original whenever you can.
- Very large images are limited by browser canvas dimensions and available memory.
Frequently asked questions
Which format should I choose?
PNG for screenshots, logos and anything with transparency or text. JPEG or WebP for photographs. WebP when you want the smallest file and control the delivery.
Why did my transparent background go black?
JPEG has no alpha channel. Convert to PNG or WebP to keep transparency.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Decoding and encoding both happen in this tab using browser APIs.
What happened to the EXIF data?
It is not preserved. That is a privacy benefit — GPS coordinates and camera details are removed — but it also means orientation tags are gone.
What is a .jfif file?
A JPEG. The extension comes from the file format JPEG is wrapped in, and renaming it to .jpg — or converting it here — is all that is ever needed.
Can it write HEIC or AVIF?
No. Browsers decode both and encode neither, so they are read only here. For AVIF, a build step with a proper encoder is the answer; for HEIC, an iPhone or a desktop tool.
