WebP to PNG Converter
Convert WebP images to PNG. Free, and runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded, stored or sent to a server, and there is no sign-up.
About WebP Converter
WebP in one direction and out of it in the other. Going to WebP is the common case: it is usually a quarter to a third smaller than a JPEG at the same visible quality, keeps transparency like a PNG, and is read by every browser released since 2020.
Lossless is worth choosing for anything with flat colour and sharp edges — logos, screenshots, diagrams — where a lossy encoder wastes bytes on artefacts around the edges it should be keeping crisp. For photographs, quality around 80 is the usual place to sit.
Coming back out of WebP matters when something in the toolchain has not caught up: an email client, an older design tool, a CMS that refuses the upload. PNG keeps everything, JPEG is smaller if there is no transparency to keep.
Where it helps
- Both directions in one tool, so a file that will not upload somewhere can be turned back.
- Lossless mode for logos, screenshots and anything with type in it.
- Keeps transparency, which is the reason PNGs are usually so large.
- Says how much was saved rather than leaving you to compare the files.
- Runs locally: nothing is uploaded to be converted.
Limits
- Browsers before 2020 — and a few older email clients and design tools — cannot read WebP at all.
- Converting a JPEG to WebP re-encodes an already lossy picture, so work from the original when you have it.
- Metadata is not carried across.
- Animated WebP is not written here: a canvas holds one frame.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller is WebP really?
For photographs, usually 25 to 35% against a JPEG of the same visible quality. For flat graphics in lossless mode, often 20 to 30% against PNG.
Should I still keep a JPEG fallback?
Only if you support browsers older than about 2020, or an email client. Every current browser reads WebP, and a <picture> element handles the rest.
Does lossless WebP keep transparency?
Yes, and so does the lossy mode. That is the main reason to move a transparent PNG to WebP.
Why is my WebP bigger than the PNG?
Lossless WebP occasionally loses to PNG on very small or very flat images. Compare the two — the size row here tells you immediately.
